Nature’s Wonders

Dry Falls

Dry Falls in Highlands, NC

It was a beautiful Sunday so we decided to play tourist and visit some of our local wonders.

Our first stop was Bridal Veil Falls, which is the closet thing we have to a drive-through. It is located just out of town on 64 and the thrill is that you drive behind the falls. I suppose looking through the falls mimics a bride’s view from behind a veil.

Next stop, just down the road, was Dry Falls. These falls have been closed for a couple of years so its recent re-opening is what motivated us in the first place earlier today. Amazing is all that can be said. Walking behind this 65 foot waterfall always makes me think of The Last of the Mohicans and Daniel Day Lewis, though I digress.

Next stop, we traveled back into Highlands and sat on Sunset Rock. This is really a must see when visiting the area and do not forget the picnic. It’s a short walk to the rock and offers the best view of our town.

Lastly, we headed out NC 106 and hiked Glen Falls. What was strange was that I always thought I had been there before but apparently not because nothing was familiar. There are some platforms at the top for the weary but to get a true feel of the falls, you have to hike to the bottom. It is apparently very tempting for some to climb over the rail and stand at the top but it is not unusual to hear about someone who under-estimated the slickness of the rocks and power of the water and goes over the edge. This occurred not too long ago and for that, our daughter’s hand was held tightly even from behind the rail.

What a great day! I never want to get so accustomed to our beautiful scenery that I forget why I moved here in the first place.
