I still find it amazing when locals and visitors ask, “Is that beautiful home in Scaly Mountain, NC?”. It’s like they think only a home of that calibre could be in Highlands, which is right down the road. The truth is we have built many homes in Scaly Mountain that prompt this question. Our clients could live in Highlands or anywhere for that matter but they chose Scaly Mountain. The majority come from “a big city” and want their second home to provide peace, quiet, acreage between their neighbors and to be surrounded by nature. Even though I have several Highlands Realtor friends, many still cannot understand why anyone would choose Scaly Mountain over Highlands. I have given up expecting them to understand and only hope that those looking for property will do their own research and find out the secret others have discovered.
When we moved here, we also thought we wanted property in Highlands but when we prioritized what was really important, it was privacy, acreage, elevation, beautiful view and to be surrounded by nature. In Highlands, we found property with elevation and a beautiful view but it did not satisfy our other priorities. We were also still living in Atlanta and owning property on this side of Highlands, cut some time off our commute. We are still a part of the Highlands community – it’s where we go to church, dinner, Rotary and participate in community events.
