Rabun Bald & Ranger Nick

Roscoe Nicholson or Ranger ”Nick” to those who had the honor of knowing him, became the first Georgia Forest Ranger in 1912. He started out as a surveyor for the federal government, became interested in conservation and was instrumental in advising the government on land purchases in the Chattahoochee National Forest. He worked tirelessly to prevent forest fires and used blood hounds to track arsonists. In addition, he built the first fire tower (see photo) on Rabun Bald, which is the second highest peak in Georgia and just around the corner from Scaly Mountain.

The hike to the top of Rabun Bald is an easy to intermediate trek and from the top, you can see over 100 miles. The elevation of Rabun Bald is 4,696 and is the tallest mountain in Rabun County, GA. The hike is about four miles round trip and is part of the Bartram Trail. Native American lore says it is inhabited by ”fire-breathing demons” though on the day of our hike with our 4-year old, none could be found. For more photos click.
