The Eastern Continental Divide runs through Scaly Mountain SO once again, we are on the map. The Eastern Divide follows the Appalachian Mountains and divides water into the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. In North Carolina, the Divide starts in Boone and once it reaches our area, follows the Bartram Trail from Scaly Mountain to Osage Mountain and runs through the communites of King Mountain, Winfield Farms and Rocky Knob.
The Eastern Divide itself is a point of controversy because some critics only recognize Divides that flow into oceans. Therefore, they do not recognize our Divide because one side flows into the Gulf of Mexico, which is obviously a part of the Atlantic. However, we are not that critical and the fact that such an important geographical line runs through our small mountain community makes Scaly Mountain all the more interesting.
