William Bartram 1739-1823) was a very respected American Naturalist who explored several southern states including North Carolina. During his travels, he made vivid documentations of plants, animals and American Indians and published the Travels of William Bartram in 1791.
Bartram’s exact route is not known though the 60 mile Bartram Trail, which travels up and over Scaly Mountain is an attempt to replicate his trek. If you have not hiked this trail, you are missing out on a treat because from the top, you can see forever. In the Scaly Mountain area, the trail can be accessed from Osage overlook and off Turtle Pond Road, which is the easiest. From the top, there are several rock outcrops perfect for picnics.
It just so happens we have a new home for sale in King Mountain and the Bartram Trail is just a short walk away. The home has an elevation of 4,300 feet and the view includes Scaly Mountain where the trail travels up and over.
